Comparing Social Presence in Corporate and Higher Education Asynchronous Learning Networks
Abstract
This pilot study evaluates the emergence of Social Presence in learning networks. The objectives are to identify effective practices and to lay the groundwork for future research. Through surveying users in a large European bank and interviewing instructors of a French business school best practices are elicited and a research agenda proposed. While Social Presence is found to be conducive to enhanced learning outcomes and instructor teaching satisfaction, it does not itself overcome other learning barriers. Social Presence is the degree to which e-learning is supported from instructors through email, telephone, or face to face interaction and its consequences on interpersonal relationships and learning outcomes.
